TikTok is closing its Nashville office and laying off 250 employees, according to labor documents filed with the state of Tennessee. The affected staff worked in content moderation.

The office, located on Music Row, opened two years ago. Its closure marks a rapid reversal of the company's regional expansion.

A TikTok USDS Joint Venture spokesperson said the move aims to "streamline our operations and better align our teams for long-term growth."

The laid-off employees were not covered by a collective bargaining agreement, the state labor documents show.

Content moderation is one of the more labor-intensive cost centers in social media, requiring large teams, substantial real estate and layered management. Consolidating those functions can reduce overhead and, in theory, make it easier to enforce consistent policies or integrate AI-assisted moderation tools.

TikTok continues to face regulatory scrutiny in the United States over data security and content governance.
