SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft's Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 will stop receiving free security updates on Jan. 12, 2027, ending its five-year lifecycle and forcing businesses to act.
Long-Term Servicing Channel versions of Windows are built for specialized systems that require maximum stability—industrial control systems, medical devices, point-of-sale terminals and ATMs. LTSC holds its feature set fixed throughout the support period, sidestepping the frequent updates that hit standard Windows releases.
The five-year window is a sharp cut from earlier LTSC releases, which typically carried a 10-year lifecycle. That shorter runway compresses the upgrade cadence for enterprises, requiring more frequent OS migration planning and capital allocation.
After Jan. 12, 2027, devices on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 will receive no security patches, bug fixes or non-security updates. Running unpatched systems exposes organizations to newly discovered exploits, raising the risk of data breaches and operational downtime.
Businesses handling sensitive customer data or operating under strict regulatory compliance standards face the steepest exposure. Unpatched systems can draw regulatory fines, reputational damage and legal liability.
Microsoft has recommended that customers with capable hardware migrate to Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. For systems that cannot run Windows 11, the prior migration path—Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021—is itself now approaching end of free support.
The upgrade cycle carries real budget weight. Costs include new software licenses, potential hardware refreshes to meet newer OS requirements, and labor for deployment, testing and user training—all of which must land in fiscal 2027 planning.
One carve-out applies to the IoT variant: Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 will continue receiving security updates through Jan. 13, 2032, reflecting the longer operational lifecycles common in IoT deployments.
Microsoft's decision to cut LTSC support from 10 years to five fits its broader strategy of pushing enterprises toward newer operating systems and cloud-integrated services more tightly coupled to recent Windows versions—generating recurring license and services revenue from its core OS business.
By controlling end-of-life dates across the Windows ecosystem, Microsoft sets the upgrade rhythm for millions of business devices globally, sustaining demand for its software and related services.
Enterprises must weigh the total cost of upgrading against the security and compliance risk of running unsupported software. The Jan. 2027 deadline is both a financial and operational forcing function for IT decision-makers.
