Kirill Basin, a Democratic candidate for Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District, was arrested Saturday after a public altercation on Keawakapu Beach in Maui. Police charged Basin, 40, with two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening.
The confrontation, captured on video that spread widely on social media, began as a dispute over music volume before turning physical. Authorities allege Basin pulled a knife and threatened a woman during the incident. Video from the scene shows Basin in a physical struggle, during which he was reportedly knocked unconscious.
Authorities set bail at $1 million.
Before the arrest, Basin had been widely described as a longshot candidate for the Democratic nomination in Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District, a seat currently held by Rep. Jill Tokuda.
