NASHVILLE — Republican Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee lost his primary reelection bid Thursday, a rare setback for President Donald Trump's endorsement record this cycle.
Challenger Charlie Hatcher, a former state agriculture commissioner backed by outgoing Republican Gov. Bill Lee, led Ogles by just over six percentage points with more than 80 percent of votes counted.
The race was the first held under Tennessee's redrawn House map. Lawmakers approved the new district boundaries earlier this spring, redrawing the 5th Congressional District under lines favorable to Republicans.
Hatcher was the sole Republican challenger in the race, consolidating the anti-incumbent vote against Ogles, a second-term conservative who had Trump's public backing.
Trump's endorsement made the contest a direct test of his pull in a House primary. He wins most such tests — but not this one.
Hatcher advances as the Republican nominee and will face the Democratic nominee in the general election.
