WASHINGTON — The Government Accountability Office reported Thursday that the Department of Government Efficiency repeatedly overstated its claimed taxpayer savings, with billions of dollars in its public tallies unsupported by federal records.
Some cuts DOGE claimed never actually occurred, the GAO said. In other cases, the office reported inaccurately on actions taken against contracts.
Roughly $110 billion of DOGE's reported savings stemmed from contracts, grants and leases. The GAO specifically cited 108 leases DOGE claimed to have cut that were already being phased out when the office was established.
The report also said ethics oversight remained unclear under Musk's leadership.
The GAO's review of federal procurement data identified specific instances where DOGE's figures did not align with agency actions or existing plans.
