Demis Hassabis stepped down as Google DeepMind's chief executive, taking on new roles as chairman of the unit and chief scientist for parent company Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu now fills the CEO position at Google DeepMind.
The leadership change formalizes a shift that had been underway for approximately one year. Hassabis had already disengaged from daily management of the AI research lab during that period.
Hassabis previously functioned as a strategic buffer between DeepMind and the wider Google organization, giving the lab distinct operational autonomy within Alphabet's structure.
With Hassabis out of the CEO role, the distance between DeepMind and the rest of Google is expected to shrink. The change points toward greater integration across Alphabet's AI initiatives and more unified product development and resource allocation.
DeepMind's independent research culture has long contrasted with Google's product-focused divisions. Removing that buffer could alter DeepMind's edge in frontier AI research and its ability to attract talent seeking pure research environments.
Alphabet's capital allocation to AI infrastructure—including the compute resources dedicated to DeepMind—will now operate under a more integrated leadership structure, potentially streamlining investment decisions and reducing internal friction.
Alphabet shares dropped 4.0 percent in trading, at $362.43. The move reflects investor reaction to the leadership transition and the strategic shifts it implies for the company's core AI development.
Closer integration could also help Alphabet monetize DeepMind's research more directly through Google Cloud, its search engine and other revenue-generating platforms—tightening the link between the lab's output and the company's commercial roadmap.
