Guard Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner are both entering the final year of their contracts. Both have ranked among the elite at their positions throughout their NFL careers.
Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon and General Manager Chris Ballard have expressed a desire to retain core talent. Irsay-Gordon and Ballard specifically indicated their intention to keep players including Nelson, setting the stage for negotiations.
Nelson anchors the offensive line, protecting the quarterback and opening running lanes. Buckner disrupts opposing offenses from the interior, pressuring quarterbacks and stopping the run.
The NFL salary cap has increased by more than $20 million since New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley signed his deal last year, giving teams more room to work with in extension talks.
The market for players seeking second contracts remains active. Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson and another running back are holding in at their training camps seeking new deals. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero also detailed upcoming extensions for Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield and Robinson.
Taylor took a different approach, practicing at training camp during his contract year. His stated desire to remain a Colt for his entire career likely factored into the swift resolution of his extension.
The Colts are also sorting out the backup running back competition. Seventh-round rookie Seth McGowan and 2025 fifth-round pick DJ Giddens are competing for the role. Giddens had 96 rushing yards in nine games last season.
Securing Nelson and Buckner would maintain continuity on both sides of the ball. Ballard's next move is clear.
