Seaver Wins No. 300, Carew Gets Hit No. 3,000 on the Same Day

On Aug. 4, 1985, Major League Baseball got two rare individual achievements in a single Sunday afternoon.

Tom Seaver recorded his 300th career win while pitching for the Chicago White Sox against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. The victory made Seaver the 17th pitcher in MLB history to reach 300 wins. He was 40 years old.

Seaver spent 20 seasons in the majors with the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. Known as "Tom Terrific" and "the Franchise," he built one of the most decorated careers in the sport. The 300-win club now stands at 24 pitchers all-time.

Across the country in Anaheim, Rod Carew collected his 3,000th career hit the same afternoon. The mark is among the rarest in baseball, a measure of sustained excellence over a long career.
