Boltz, a non-custodial Bitcoin swap service, suspended its operations indefinitely, citing a surge in AI-assisted attacks against its infrastructure that its small development team could not keep pace with.

The service facilitates atomic swaps, connecting Bitcoin's mainnet with the Lightning Network. Its non-custodial design means users retain control of their funds throughout the swap process—but that same architecture places the security burden squarely on the protocol.

Boltz said the suspension is not a response to a single incident. Automated, AI-assisted probing escalated steadily over recent months, and the team had previously contained several exploits before the attack volume became unmanageable.

Attackers are using AI to discover vulnerabilities and adapt exploits faster than the development team can identify and close security gaps. That speed advantage is what forced the halt.

Users attempting swaps on Boltz will find the service unavailable. The company said its API remains operational for cooperative refunds, and unilateral refunds function independently of its core infrastructure. The support team remains reachable, and funds involved in pending or failed swaps can still be recovered.

Boltz has not provided a timeline for resuming swap services.

Bitcoin trades at $64,005, up 2.0 percent over the past 24 hours. Ethereum holds at $1,867, up 0.7 percent in the same period.

As AI tools become more accessible, the barrier to entry for sophisticated cyberattacks drops. Small teams securing critical infrastructure face a structural disadvantage: the resources required to counter AI-powered adversaries—continuous security audits, robust bug bounty programs, threat intelligence—are substantial. Boltz's situation makes that gap concrete.
