Proof of work

Proof of Work is a consensus mechanism used by Bitcoin where miners compete to solve a complex cryptographic puzzle to validate transactions and add new blocks to the blockchain.

What it is

Proof of Work (PoW) is the original consensus algorithm used by Bitcoin to secure its network and validate transactions. Miners expend computational power to find a specific hash that meets certain criteria, effectively "proving" they have done work. The first miner to find this hash gets to add the next block of transactions to the blockchain and receives the block reward. This process prevents double-spending and secures the network.

PoW is central to Bitcoin's security model, making it resistant to censorship and attacks like the 51% attack. Its energy consumption is a frequent topic in policy debates and environmental discussions. News often covers the ongoing debate between PoW and other consensus mechanisms like Proof of Stake, especially regarding scalability and environmental impact. Understanding PoW is key to grasping Bitcoin's fundamental operation.

Why it matters

PoW is the foundation of Bitcoin's security and decentralization, ensuring transactions are valid and the network is resistant to manipulation.
