What it is
MiCA, or the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, is a landmark legislative package enacted by the European Union to create a harmonized regulatory framework for crypto assets. It covers a broad range of digital assets not already covered by existing financial services legislation, including stablecoins, e-money tokens, and other utility tokens. MiCA establishes rules for issuers of crypto assets and service providers (CASPs), setting requirements for authorization, operational resilience, consumer protection, and market integrity.
MiCA is designed to bring regulatory clarity and consistency to the EU crypto market, contrasting with the fragmented approach seen in other jurisdictions. It imposes disclosure requirements for crypto asset issuers and mandates that CASPs obtain authorization to operate, similar to traditional financial institutions. For retail investors, MiCA aims to enhance consumer protection, reduce market manipulation risks, and provide greater transparency. Its implementation affects which crypto products and services are available and how they are offered within the EU.
Why it matters
MiCA is the EU's comprehensive crypto law, aiming to protect investors and stabilize markets. It sets standards that will affect how you access and trade crypto assets in the EU.
