What it is
Max supply represents the finite upper limit on the total number of tokens or coins that a cryptocurrency project can ever have. Once this limit is reached, no more units of that cryptocurrency can be created. Not all cryptocurrencies have a fixed maximum supply; some, like Ethereum, have an uncapped supply but implement burning mechanisms to manage inflation.
This metric is fundamental for evaluating a cryptocurrency's scarcity and long-term value proposition. Projects with a low or fixed max supply, like Bitcoin's 21 million coins, are often considered more deflationary, which can theoretically drive up value over time if demand increases. Conversely, projects with a very high or uncapped max supply might face inflationary pressures unless there are strong token burning mechanisms in place.
Why it matters
Max supply indicates a cryptocurrency's scarcity and potential for long-term value appreciation or inflationary pressure, crucial for long-term outlook.
