Gnosis Chain will transition from a standalone Layer 1 blockchain to an Ethereum-settled rollup, retiring its independent validator set of roughly 52,000 active participants. The shift ends the network's sovereign proof-of-stake operation and moves block production to a centralized sequencer, according to a GnosisDAO governance proposal.

The validator count has already declined to approximately 52,000 from 76,000 a month prior. GNO stakers who locked tokens to secure the network and earn rewards will have their stake unlocked as the network abandons its distributed validation model.

The transition adopts the Ethereum-aligned Execution Zones (EEZ) framework, co-developed by Gnosis and ZisK with co-funding from the Ethereum Foundation. Under EEZ, Gnosis Chain will operate as a synchronously composable Layer 2 with forced-inclusion escape hatches, altering the core consensus mechanism that previously secured the network.

Gnosis Chain previously functioned as an EVM-compatible execution layer using the xDAI stablecoin for transaction fees. Its security was maintained by the Gnosis Beacon Chain, a proof-of-stake consensus layer where GNO stakers validated transactions and earned rewards.

The Gnosis Beacon Chain also served as a testing ground for Ethereum consensus-layer updates, demonstrating technical alignment with Ethereum's evolution. Gnosis cultivated a strong culture of independent homestakers running nodes without cloud infrastructure, prioritizing geographic distribution.

The network also adopted Ethereum's composite client software and tooling stack, facilitating deeper ecosystem integration and enabling its current pivot to rollup architecture.

GNO currently trades at $122.58. The transition implies a fundamental shift in token utility for GNO holders as staking and network validation are discontinued.
