MODERNA stock surged 177 percent this week following positive Phase 3 trial results for its personalized mRNA melanoma vaccine developed with Merck, driving investor optimism for the biotech's cancer pipeline and validation of its mRNA platform beyond infectious disease.

The stock spiked as high as $143.72 intraday before pulling back. Short sellers lost an estimated $4.8 billion as Moderna became the single biggest gainer in the S&P 500 during the trading session.

Morgan Stanley raised its price target to $89 from $39 on Aug. 19, 2026. Goldman Sachs lifted its target to $120 from $67 on the same day. BofA upgraded Moderna to Neutral from Underperform. Jefferies maintained its Hold rating.

The trial results validate Moderna's shift into oncology—a critical growth vector for a company facing biosimilar pressure in its respiratory vaccine franchise. The melanoma vaccine, if approved, could generate substantial commercial upside given the addressable market and potential for combination therapies with checkpoint inhibitors. The personalized approach also differentiates Moderna from competitors and may command premium pricing.

Moderna's cancer pipeline includes intismeran autogene, a personalized neoantigen therapy, alongside T-cell engagers and cell therapy enhancers. The company maintains 25 mRNA candidates in clinical development across infectious disease, oncology, cardiovascular disease, and rare genetic disorders. Beyond oncology, Moderna's approved vaccines include Spikevax and products targeting RSV, seasonal flu, and pandemic preparedness. Earlier-stage programs target cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, HIV, norovirus, Zika, Nipah, Mpox, and Lyme disease.

The company's rare disease franchise addresses propionic acidemia, methylmalonic acidemia, and cystic fibrosis. Strategic partnerships include collaborations with Merck, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Immatics, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.

The broader mRNA sector benefited from Moderna's news. Arcturus Therapeutics rose 60 percent this week.
