The third and final round of August Social Security payments will be issued Wednesday, Aug. 26, reaching retirees born on or after the 21st of any month. Eligible beneficiaries can receive up to $5,181.
The Social Security Administration structures its payment schedule around birth dates to manage monthly outflows. The first round went out Aug. 12 for those born on or before the 10th of a month; the second on Aug. 19 for those born between the 11th and 20th.
Retirees can claim benefits as early as age 62, receiving up to $2,969 per month. Those who delay until age 70 can collect the maximum $5,181 monthly, according to the Social Security Administration.
The program faces a financial cliff. Trustees project the Social Security retirement fund will deplete by 2032 unless Congress acts. The crisis stems from a shrinking workforce relative to rising retirees—a demographic shift that threatens the fund's solvency.
Without legislative intervention, the program will no longer be able to pay full benefits. Congress must address the imbalance to maintain current payment levels.
Social Security is financed through a dedicated payroll tax split between employers and employees, which funds benefits for current retirees and other eligible individuals.
Beneficiaries can estimate their monthly payment using the Social Security Administration's personalized calculator based on their individual circumstances.
Note: Individuals receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, or those who began receiving retirement, spousal, or survivor benefits before May 1997, typically receive payments on the third day of each month.
