Florida voters chose their party's nominees for governor, U.S. Senate and several House seats in primary elections today, setting matchups with major implications for Congress and the statehouse.
Congressman Byron Donalds won the Republican gubernatorial primary with President Trump's backing, advancing past 10 other candidates to face Democrat David Jolly, a former Republican, in November. If Donalds prevails, he would become Florida's first Black governor.
In the Democratic Senate primary, progressive candidate Angie Nixon defeated retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Alex Vindman.
In the U.S. House, Republican incumbent Cory Mills lost his Central Florida seat to challenger Ryan Elijah. Mills had faced a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations that he assaulted a former girlfriend and violated campaign finance laws. Mills denied any wrongdoing.
Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz won her primary in a newly drawn district spanning Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The Republican-led state legislature redrew the maps this year, forcing her out of her old district into one more competitive. The move eliminated what had been a favorable opportunity for a Black candidate to win the seat.
